From early Christian settlements like the Devenish Monastic Site and White Island to the many breath-taking churches and monuments dotted around Upper and Lower Lough Erne, there’s something for everyone to discover here. Check out some of our favourites...

1. Crom Estate

Location: Newtownbutler
Set on the shores of Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Crom is one of Ireland's most important nature conservation areas.
Wild deer, pine marten, red squirrels and many rare species including butterflies can all be found on the estate. Also inhabiting the surrounding area are all eight species of native bats and an outstanding array of rare lichens. The 2,000 acre demesne contains ancient woodland, tranquil islands, estate cottages and Old Crom Castle, all linked by the breathtakingly beautiful landscape designed by W.S.Gilpin in the 19th century.
Enjoy an inspirational walk through the woodland and along the nature trails, where you can also enjoy spectacular views from the water by boat or canoe. FIND OUT MORE

2.Devenish Island Monastic Site

Devenish of the Assemblies was founded by St Molaise in the 6th century, the monastery of Devenish Island was the most important of Lough Erne’s many island monasteries. Over the centuries it became a large parish stretching across both sides of the Lough, attracting pilgrims and parishioners until the 1600s.

The remains of the buildings you see today date from the 12th, 13th and 15th centuries. Remnants of the island’s earlier history remain hidden beneath your feet.

Devenish was a holy place of worship, scholarship and burial, accessible only by water. It was a place of welcome for pilgrims, as well as where people lived, worked and prayed. It was also a safe meeting place for powerful chieftains and religious leaders and was given the name Devenish of the Assemblies. FIND OUT MORE

3. Monea Castle

Built for Malcolm Hamilton and completed in 1618, it has a Scottish look about it, with corner turrets at one narrow end of a rectangular four-storey building and with two massive full-height round towers having angular tops guarding the entrance at the other end.
This imposing structure stood in one corner of a walled bawn with rounded corner towers, one of which subsequently served as a dovecote. The castle fell briefly into Irish hands in 1641, and was held by Gustavus Hamilton, governor of Enniskillen in 1688. It appears to have been burned in the 18th century and was abandoned. 4. Enniskillen Castle

Enniskillen Castle, situated beside the River Erne in County Fermanagh, was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires.
Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site houses two museums, Fermanagh County Museum and The Inniskillings Museum.
Visitors can enjoy The Inniskillings Museum within the castle grounds. Fermanagh County Museum's Medieval Maguires display remains open for visitors on the ground floor of the castle keep. FIND OUT MORE
