Historical Talk on the Williamite War in Fermanagh by Darren Graham
Historian Darren Graham has studied and written upon The Battle of Newtownbutler which is one of the forgotten fights of the Irish Jacobite Wars. He has delivered a number of lectures throughout Ireland on this period of history.
In 1689, several skirmishes took place throughout Fermanagh that represented a turning point for what followed at the Boyne and Aughrim. The landscape of Fermanagh with Lough Erne running through it shaped how the war was fought here.
The Eniskilleners would, for several months, coordinate resistance against the fledgling Jacobite army, supply and reinforce, raid and attack important positions on the shores and islands supplied by the traditional cot boats of lough Erne. Darren brings insight to how the Williamite War was carried out in Fermanagh and generally makes the securing of the Northern Province impossible.
It was not until James sent an experienced Jacobite general, Justin McCarthy - Lord Mountcashel, against the Enniskilleners, that the two sides would meet in battle. Newtownbutler would see a defining moment for both sides, and the result would change the face of the war.
