About

Join us for an informative evening on Tuesday the 18th February as Lisnaskea Historical Society welcomes historian Dr Brendan Scott for an in-depth talk on Captain Brian Maguire and the Books of Knockninny.

This rare insight into one of Fermanagh's most intriguing manuscripts will transport you back to 1718, when Brian Maguire of Knockninny commissioned scholars and scribes to preserve the rich tapestry of Irish history, poetry, and legend. The result? A beautifully compiled manuscript containing everything from ancient Irish origin myths (Leabhar Gabhála Éireann) to medieval battles and poetic disputes.

Dr Brendan Scott—co-author of The Books of Knockninny: Manuscripts, Culture and Society in Early Eighteenth-Century Fermanagh—will bring this manuscript to life, exploring its historical significance, the Maguire family's legacy, and its place in Irish literary tradition.

Expect a riveting talk filled with history, storytelling, and scholarly insights, perfect for anyone interested in local history, Irish manuscripts, or the enduring power of the written word.

All are welcome! Admission is £5, payable at the door, and includes refreshments after the event
