Lisnaskea Historical Society will provide a guided heritage tour of Aghalurcher Old Church and Cemetery, Lisnaskea on Saturday, 14 September 2024 between hours 1300 and 1630 - pre-booking only. This is an important site dedicated to St Ronan who died pre 635 AD. Ruins is 12th Century and site was an important point on the Lough Erne Pilgrimage Trail, it was main burying place of the Maguire Chieftains who ruled most of the county in mid 13th C to end of 16th C. Later its vault and graveyard was utilised for prominent Plantation settlers, early stones are show traditions they brought in memorialising their dead and which were subsequently adapted by native Irish. Site has many carved stones covering the history of both cultural traditions over the centuries. Graveyard continues in use by local families, despite being no usable church there for over 500 years.
